Wordpress 2.7 and incompatible plugins: A dangerous mix!

I had some great expectations when I saw Wordpress 2.7. Now that I installed, I had great nightmares, but not because of the program itself. Wordpress is fine. The problem was the plugins that are incompatible with it.

Because of the X-Language plugin, all the urls at Cartoon Leap had at the end (lang/en) so the user could change the language version of the site.  After the installation of WP2.7, the plugin turned into a nightmare making the urls a big mess. When an user tried to comment, the site shows an 404 page not found error because the plugin was showing the (lang/en) but the software couldnt recognize the code and only showed 404 errors. The other problem was the RSS feed…All the posts in the RSS dissapeared and even new posts was not appearing at all.

At the end, I had to deactivate the plugin and installed the WP 2.7. There were some collateral damage. All search engines and RSS aggregators reflects the old url with the (lang/en) so if users tries to access, they will find the 404 page not found message.  I had to change the RSS url and probably the search engines will take some time to detect the new changes. I placed a message for the old and new visitors to inform about the mess so it will take some time for the website to recover.

Be careful with plugins that are not updated for a long time. It happened to me, it can happen to anyone else.

I suggest killing your plugins and rolling back (if you can) until they’re updated, as plugin updates lag incremental WordPress versions by ~3 months.

Actually I did that several times, unistalling the plugin and did the rolling back. Unfortunately, I cant use some new plugins that comes for WP7 exclusively….So guess I will stay with this WP 7…I appreciate your suggestion… :)
