Recently, there was an announcement that a remake for the Karate Kid is in it`s way for 2010. Jaden Smith, Will Smith`s son has signed for the title role as the next Daniel LaRusso but there`s still speculation for who will be the next Mr. Miyagi. According to Will Smith, there`s no Mr. Miyagi yet.
There is a list of possible candidates for the role but he does not want to say any names because of obvious confidentiality aggreements.

There are more news about this. It seems that the possible locations for the movie are in China due to the fact that the producers of the new untitled Karate Kid movie are doing the film with the China Film Group. The locations may include Beijing.
Aside from addressing the Miyagi’s casting, Smith also revealed one interesting twist on the plot. “We’re making it with the China Film Group, so it’ll be based in Beijing,” he said of where the modern version of “Karate Kid” will take place. “Mr. Miyagi was originally Japanese, so there’ll be a Chinese adaptation to it.”
On the possibility that many will question how could Karate which is a Japanese martial art be brought to China, Smith reasoned that although karate was developed in Japan, it is based on Chinese fighting style, Kenpo. “Fortunately, karate is originally a Chinese art form,” he said, “so that’s the area we’re playing around in.”

Many martial styles comes from China but certainly when you think of Karate and Kung Fu, Japan and China comes to mind respectively. It is going to be hard to use “Karate Kid” as the main title when the setup is in China. I could think about “Kung Fu Kid” instead but guess the producers wants to use the original title because of its success.

I dont agree too much on “remakes” when the original movies were successful except perhaps if they want to improve on visuals or give the story a twist. Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita had a good chemistry. If they are going to hire a good actor for the role of Mr. Miyagi, they need someone that has the same chemistry with Jaden Smith. I hope them good luck on this. If this remake fails, We always have the original and the Karate Kid is really good on its own.
