Rotten Tomatoes for Dragonball Evolution!

Dragon Ball Evolution, The movie We love to hate is on cinema screens and unfortunately and with no surprise at all, it has poor box office results and bad reviews. Rotten Tomatoes has the first reviews from critics and moviegoers and the scores are really pathetic.

Usually in Rotten Tomatoes website, if the positive reviews reach 60% or more, the film is considered “fresh” and as for Saturday, April 11, 2009, Dragon Ball Evolution has only 17% of approval which means it is way Rotten! Registered members of the website only gave the movie 36% of approval.
It is still to early to judge the fate of the movie because only 30 critics voted so far for the movie and the Top Critics of RT still have to vote, but if the tendency keeps, it is a logical thing that Dragon Ball Evolution will be certified Rotten all the way.
Numbers are not lying. Sources told that during the opening day on Friday, the movie only got $2,075,000 while Hannah Montana got $17,400,000. Basically Goku was beaten by a girl…ouch!
“Executed with little panache or invention, Dragonball Evolution lacks the magic that made the books upon which it was based a cult sensation.” is the final consensus in Rotten Tomatoes.
With all of this being said, it is not clear what is going to happen with the sequel of Dragon Ball Evolution. Probably the whole idea will be scrapped or the producers will try a second shot, fixing all the mistakes of the first one. No one knows for sure, but with all the negative reaction way before the opening release and with the poor reviews it is receiving now, Dragon Ball Evolution was indeed the Chronicle of a Death Foretold.
My apologies to Gabriel Garcia Marquez for using the title of his novel, but I thought it was a fitting end for the post.

Thank god and serves them right. This was one of the most terrible movies I’ve ever seen, and I’m confident that I would have thought so even if I didn’t know ANYTHING about Dragonball. As the reviewer on ANN said, this movie appeals to NO ONE. Not the commonfolk, not the fans. I really, really hope that sequel dies as it should because there is no redemption for this movie without just remaking the whole thing not to suck and I doubt anyone would want to invest money in that because the fans are livid enough as it is.

To do a good Dragonball movie would be to gut the entire existing cast and crew responsible for the first travesty. Obvious to us, but it’s clear that (most) big Hollywood studios only knows how to throw money at their problems.

I think the main problem is Fox. If you look at their TV shows and other things, their entire business model appears to be to strive for the 10 year old boy / ignorant redneck demographic (though I don’t even know Dragonball would appeal to even them).
I don’t notice any other major studios putting out abhorrent pieces of trash like Dragonball and Street Fighter (or they may be abhorrent pieces of trash, but they at least make money, so at least a few people must like it), at least not at the same pace.

Dragonball the movie the game didn’t do so well on Metacritic either http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/psp/dragonballevolution
IGN gave it a 20/100, but it’s so bad it’s funny.
It’s hard to beat teenybobbers in terms of box office. The power of Hannah Montana is quite scary

I wonder at the extent of the damage Dragonball Evolution made to the Dragonball franchise esp. to the not so hardcore fans.
