Japan Firefighters forced to do 10,000 push-ups!

There is something wrong with Japanese Firefighters these days.

Eleven senior firefighters have been punished for hazing new recruits by making them perform 10,000 pushups, among other abuses, the Matsudo Fire Department said Wednesday.

The action taken against those disciplined included cuts in their salaries.

Five of the 10 new recruits who participated in the harsh training quit after the incident.

In April, four of the recruits sued the Matsudo municipal government, demanding 12.1 million yen in damages to compensate for their reluctant resignations as a result of the grueling training and bullying.

According to officials from the Matsudo Fire Department, training for the 10 new firefighters, who were recruited during fiscal 2005, was conducted over two months beginning in March 2006 at a facility in the city.

An instructor allegedly said one of the recruits had “removed his helmet during training” and made him sit seiza-style on his heels on a concrete surface for about an hour. The new recruits also faced verbal abuse, including statements such as, “there’re many people who can replace you” and “we’re going to kill you.”

In addition, one of the recruits who had been forced to resign during training was summoned on his day off and ordered to perform 10,000 pushups. The new recruit was drained physically after continuously doing more than 800 pushups, officials said.

As part of their lawsuit, the recruits who resigned requested that the Matsudo Fire Department preserve evidence in the form of instructional training records that were made in February, prompting officials from the fire department to conduct an investigation.

As a result, three senior officials of the planning and coordination office who were responsible for the training regimen, including the office head, had one-tenth of their salary cut for one month. Four instructors were reprimanded and given stern warnings. In addition, four other officials also were punished and dealt stern warnings.

I still have fresh in my mind that incident when one firefighter burnt his own station…remember?At least the bad guys got what they deserved! On a curious note, I think the only ones that can do so many pushups are Goku and…Hinako!…I prefer to watch her doing it…
