Tokyo Tower was lit up in five colors Saturday night to demonstrate the Japanese capital’s hopes to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

It was colored in strips from the upper part in white, yellow, red, green and blue to the bottom at 7 p.m. as dusk fell, using white light instead of the original black in the Olympic rings, tower operator officials said.

A total of 2,016 strips of paper were prepared at the observation deck of the tower so visitors could write down their hopes on them to take part in a popular Japanese tradition for the July 7 star festival called Tanabata.

People visited the deck largely in pairs or groups, and were seen writing such hopes as, “Please let us spend days healthfully,” or, “Please realize my hope to marry.”

The strips of paper will be displayed in Copenhagen when the International Olympic Committee meets in the Danish capital to decide on the 2016 Olympic venue.

It should be cool if Japan can host the Olympic games.
