It happened when Michael Jackson passed away and now it happens now that Noriko Sakai was arrested…all of their songs top charts!

Singer-actress Noriko Sakai’s 1995 single “Aoi Usagi” (Blue Rabbit) was the most downloaded song Tuesday on the popular iTunes music download site following her arrest over alleged stimulant possession.

Sakai’s recording label Victor Entertainment withdrew her CDs from stores and suspended downloads of her songs on Sunday, a day after the 38-year-old was arrested, but users are likely obtaining it from compilation albums that include the song.

The iTunes Store does not give download counts but said it is rare for an old song to rank higher than newly released songs.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Sakai’s songs “Kagami no Doresu” (The Dress in the Mirror) and “Sekaiju no Dare Yori Kitto” (More than Anyone in the World) appeared in the top 100 downloaded songs list at 17th and 18th, respectively.

Sakai’s arrest has become a major news story since her husband’s arrest on Aug. 3 for alleged amphetamine possession and her subsequent disappearance.

Sakai turned herself in to police on Saturday and has admitted to taking stimulants after being encouraged by her husband.

It is sort of unfortunate when things like this happens…The other unfortunate event is that her record label withdrew her CDs and suspended downloads of her songs after Noriko Sakai’s arrest. I think it is unfair because all those songs were popular BEFORE her arrest and there are fans that are willing to forgive their fallen idol!
