Ah Hollywood…They love to try and fix everything that is not broken! I am not against live action versions of anime, but because of previous experiences, the transition has been pretty traumatic and anime lovers worldwide know it. Let´s take for example the news I heard about a possible live action version of…Paprika!

Moviehole via The Anime Blog reports that Wolfgang Petersen, the director of such a classic as The Neverending story is going for the Live Action version of Paprika. Now, Paprika is a masterpiece of Japanese animation directed by Satoshi Kon and animated by Madhouse Studios based on Yasutaka Tsutsui’s 1993 novel of the same name (Thanks Wiki!)
Now the question prevails…Why? Let´s see some facts:
- It has been a long time since Mr. Petersen directed something. The last thing He directed was Poseidon in 2006, based on the classic 1972 version of the same name…and that movie really rocked…The 1972 version I say…and that movie WAS not broken!
- Paprika is a great anime movie with tons of digital effects, a complex story and interesting characters…It is NOT broken, but it is an ANIME!
There is little information about this so We cant make a serious judgement. The positive note is that Mr. Petersen has a long list of hits and fortunately, not many “bombs” on his filmography. The decent thing He can do to calm panicked anime fans is at least, hire Satoshi Kon as a creative consultant because He will need all the help He can get! Paprika the Anime just raised the bar a little bit too high!
I don´t doubt about Mr. Petersen talents as a director, but fans are a little bit tired of this adaptations or remakes, if you know what I mean!
