Many scanlations are of very good scan quality and translations are up to par with official releases in most cases. Even those are are of lesser quality don't loose all that much, especially when the translator freely admits where they've had trouble. The fact that scanlations <i>aren't</i> an inferior product is precisely what makes them so dangerous to publishers. Well, while I’m glad to see that Japanese publishers are looking into expanding their reach officially rather than just focusing on cease-and-desist orders and legal routes, I think some of their attacks on scanlations are kind of unnecessary.
