Studio Ghibli’s “next project” announcement, unofficial…yet!
It seems the announcement on Studio Ghibli’s “Taketori Monogatari” was unofficial and was just a personal remark by one of its founders.
TOKYO — Co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata, is to direct his first animated feature in a decade, an adaptation of the classic 10th century Japanese folk-tale “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter” (“Taketori Monogatari”).
“Mr. Takahata spoke about this in an individual capacity at the Locarno Festival but we’ve made no official announcement yet as a studio,” a staffer at the Studio Ghibli complex west of Tokyo, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Takahata received the Leopard of Honor award for his lifetime achievements at the 62nd Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland in August.
Neither Takahata, whose last film was 1999’s “My Neighbors the Yamadas,” nor his partner Hayao Miyazaki, have yet attempted adapting a Japanese fairytale. Taketori Monogatari, also known as Kaguya Hime no Monogatari, has had a number of live-action versions over the years.
Studio Ghibli declined to comment on rumors that Hayao Miyazaki has two new features in the pipeline.

Even when it is an unofficial announcement, it is good to see some interesting activity by Studio Ghibli. Our apologies for giving information that was somehow just a rumor and not official. Really embarrassing, but guess this happens.

Miyazaki: Possible 2 new movies? I just exploded.
As to who will be Miyazaki’s successor? No one. When he retires, life will end, and the apocalypse will begin. I’m sure of it.
