Learning Japanese with Manga and Anime? It is possible…and official!

The Japan Foundation, a government-affiliated body set up to promote cultural exchange, has opened an English-language website that helps users better understand Japanese expressions used in manga and anime.

“Japanese in Anime & Manga” (http://anime-manga.jp) carries expressions used in four genres–love, school, ninja and samurai–and by eight typical characters.

A vocabulary quiz is available for three levels of proficiency.

Meanwhile, Tokyo’s Nerima Ward, which bills itself as the birthplace of Japanese anime, is currently running a 15-second clip from Galaxy Express 999 on its website (http://www.city.nerima.tokyo.jp).

The popular anime was created by Leiji Matsumoto, a manga artist who lives in the ward.
