Occult Academy Episode 8 Impressions

I’m happy to say that this week’s episode of Occult Academy has gotten back on track! After a few weeks of uneventful episodes, the real occult stuff makes a comeback. This episode is action packed; it reminds me why I first feel in love with this show. The pacing is on par with the first couple of episodes.

Maya and Ami had a little fight at the end of episode seven. Things pick-up right where they left off, they’re still mad at each other, but their falling out does not take up the whole episode. No, something strange is happening. Cows are being sucked dry.

Right when Ami and Maya are about to make up, some crazy green creatures with fangs show up, by show up I mean one is attached to Kozue’s arm! That poor girl is always getting in trouble, but Kozue isn’t the real damsel in distress, Ami is. A big green monster appears and decides to kidnap her. These monsters I keep referring to have a name, they’re Chupacabra.

Maya and Kozue go inform Ami’s father about her kidnapping. This leads to a rescue mission, JK and Smile tag along. Bunmei also gets dragged into their mission, literally!

Once they reach their destination, a gang of Chupacabra show up and it’s time to party. Maya has a crossbow, Smile has his big ass wrench, JK has his dowsing rods, Bunmei has a stick, and Ami’s father has a nail gun. Oh and Kozue has fallen into a hole, what’s new? Anyway, Maya and the guys go ape on the hideous little creatures. We’re treated to a nice action sequence. The guys hold the Chupacabra off while Maya goes to rescue Ami.

Now that Ami is safe, she and Maya kiss and make up. That’s a saying, they don’t actually kiss! Sorry guys, no Yuri in this anime, only in my dreams! The newly reunited team goes on the defensive and slaughters a few baddies. The Mama shows up (the big monster that kidnapped Ami). Obviously she’s pissed; they came into her home and killed like fifty of her kids! They were ugly little hell spawn, but they were still hers.

Ami’s father shows up and decapitates her; she does not get a chance to avenge the untimely deaths of her offspring. Sorry Mama Chupacabra. Decapitation for the win! The day is saved, but the shrine is on fire. This is the Vice Principal’s handy work. She and the man in black (Random Note: I miss LOST, ugh!) are still trying to get rid of Maya.

And that’s episode eight. Overall it was a great episode that came at the right time. After the last two episodes, I was starting to have second thoughts. Now I’m back on board.

Occult Academy Episode 7 Impressions

Fireworks, BBQ’s, and late nights chasing alien spaceships! That’s what summer is all about, okay maybe not that last part! Anyway, that’s what this episode of Occult Academy is about. Kuroki’s dad plays a big role in this episode, he’s trying to get Maya to lighten up and have some fun. Turns out she used to be a lot happier; we get to see this in flashbacks. Young Maya is adorable, unfortunately she can longer be that way knowing the world is about to end soon. The pressure is starting to get to her.

Crop circles are starting to appear, so Maya and Bunmei go to investigate. At this point they’re desperate to find the Nostradamus key. Kuroki’s father offers to help them with their stake out of the crop circle. This leads to a wild driving sequence through the countryside.

Once again the animation on this series doesn’t fail to impress me. Some of the scenes look like paintings. Anime doesn’t need glossy animation to look stunning. I’m talking about you Angel Beats!

The aliens are not what they appear to be and this is upsetting to Maya. She’s angry and gets out of line. Luckily, Kuroki gives her a well-deserved smack. I hate to see friends fight, but Maya had it coming. This anime is going in a direction I wasn’t expecting, the first episode set the bar really high. I was hoping every episode would be like that, but all in all it’s still enjoyable.

Overall this was a good episode. The pacing is a little slow, but if you have the patience to stick in there you will be rewarded.
