Funimation has the NERV to pick up Evangelion 1.01!
Evangelion 1.01 was a huge success and it is not surprising that an North-American company picked up the rights to distribute it outside of Japan. Sure it took a little bit longer than expected but the news is a good one for Evangelion fans living outside Japan!
The North American distributor FUNimation Entertainment has announced on Wednesday that it has acquired Evangelion:1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, the first film in an ongoing four-film remake of the Evangelion science-fiction anime franchise. Director Hideaki Anno (Aim for the Top! Gunbuster, His and Her Circumstances, Love and Pop) co-created the original 1995-1996 Neon Genesis Evangelion television series at the anime studio Gainax (Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, Nadia – Secret of Blue Water, FLCL). The Evangelion story subverted the standard robot anime tropes of a scientist’s robot-piloting son and global apocalypse, all while dealing with themes of alienation and individuality.
Evangelion already hit the big screen in two films in 1997, but Anno co-founded a studio called Khara to remake Evangelion into four new films with NTV. The first film, Evangelion:1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, opened in Japan at #1 with standing-room-only audiences in September 2007. It eventually earned over 2 billion yen (about US$20 million) at the box office. It then sold 219,000 DVDs in its first week of release in April, and sold 297,927 copies by December. It won the Harayasa Tōkaimura Award at the 7th Annual Japanese Otaku Awards, the Animation of the Year award at the 7th Annual Tokyo Anime Awards, and the Theatrical Film Award at the 13th Animation Kobe Awards.
The official website notes that FUNimation has the enhanced Evangelion:1.01 You Are (Not) Alone edition that was first released in Japan on DVD.

There are a couple of questions that fans will probably ask, but of course, Funimation will answer later before the official release. Questions like the release date, the extras that are included on the DVD and of course, the cool thing is if there will be a Blu-Ray release as well?…Visit the official website for details!
Meanwhile, guess I will enjoy the official japanese DVD version!
C&D Confirmed: Funimation sent “Death Notes” to Fansubbers!
The North American anime distributor FUNIMATION has confirmed on Monday that it issued cease-and-desist letters on behalf of its Japanese partners to stop the fan-subtitled distribution of the following titles:

- Evangelion: 1.0 You (Are) Not Alone,
- Soul Eater,
- Spice + Wolf,
- Mushi-Uta,
- and My Bride is a Mermaid! a.k.a. Seto no Hanayome
According to Funimation, it has “recent authorization agreements with Kadokawa, NTV, Media Factory, and TV Tokyo Medianet” to send these letters. The Nyoron Fansubs group reports that the cease-and-desist letter for the Evangelion: 1.0 You (Are) Not Alone film was sent on behalf of NTV.
Funimation notes, as it has in past cease-and-desist efforts, “We want to stress that though these series are not yet licensed to a distribution company in the U.S., the rights owned by Japanese producers are still applicable, and enforceable, worldwide. ”
Funimation also continued to send out cease-and-desist letters for the D.Gray-man and Katekyo Hitman Reborn! anime, as it has been doing since earlier this year. Funimation announced it had acquired D.Gray-man this past May.

This has some sort of sweet sour taste and I dont like it too much. If they are going to send C & D letters, I hope the titles gets licensed pretty soon (I doubt it according to the press release) instead of waiting for months or years. And even if titles are released for video streaming, there are some people that will not be able to watch it. I can´t even talk about the quality of their videos…because I cant access!
I will like to buy the EVA movie but when it is going to be available? Considering that the company that will release it has to pay HUGE royalties for the distribution rights it will take some time. Guess people will have to wait for the official release, wait for “others” to continue fansubbing or learn japanese to watch anime without english subtitles. At least there are options to choose.

Evangelion 2.0: You can not advance until 2009!
I really hope this movie is good because of this delay. Probably Gainax had their funds for this movie on some nasty bank or probably Hideaki Anno had some new depression. NO explanation is given but that movie better be good or else. Time is precious you know. In another subject, it is interesting to see the new poster for the EVA 2.0.
They included Asuka and a new character that was shown in the preview trailer on EVA 1.0. Gainax is really famous for doing this kind of stunt. (Adding some new thingy in an old product…remastered eva dvds anyone?)
Anyway, I am waiting this movie anxiously and I hope We can all watch it before any other disaster happens.
For the EVA 3.0 poster, I did my own version of it with possible predictions of what could happen in the third movie.
Feel free to write your own predictions as well. Possible spoilers….Shinji is not there anymore and the mysterious new character is probably Suzumiya Haruhi! (yeah right!)
