J-pop singer Namie Amuro will release a new album on Wednesday, including a song whose video features herself and a main character from the popular TV anime series “Mobile Suit Gundam.”

In the animated video of the song “Defend Love,” included in the album “Past < Future,” Amuro faces off against the character — Gundam pilot Amuro Ray.

Sharing the same name, Amuro, who says she has always felt connected to Amuro Ray since her childhood, reportedly planned to “co-star” with the character to mark the 30th anniversary of the Gundam series. Creators of the anime series and leading Japanese animation studios spent two months to complete the music video.

The song “Defend Love” — made under the theme of “love (a world) that must be defended” — represents messages like, “We must not be exploited for war” and “Weapons must not be misused.”

The album will go on sale for 3,059 yen (3,990 yen with a DVD).

I would love to see this video, knowing that both “Amuro” will be there for a blast!

Gundam Unicorn follows Kara no Kyoukai path!

It seems the producers of Gundam Unicorn will follow a new trend for the series. They will not air the series on TV and instead, They will follow Kara no Kyoukai successful path by using some interesting ways to reach their fans.

gundamucThe chief editior of AnimeAnimeJapan reported the recent trend of the anime business. Bandai Visual’s decision not to air Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn on TV showed their determination to abandon the conventional strategy for the promotion of anime. The combination of the old media (theater release) with the new media (online streaming) is their solution to overcome the decline of the anime media sales.

The midnight broadcastings have been playing a indispensable role for the promotion of anime since 1990’s. However, it’s obscure that such late night programs have any appeal to the first time viewers. Moreover, the large amount of the programming fees paid to the TV companies has been a great burden to the anime producers. In 2000’s, anime producers tried online streaming as an alternative to TV broadcasting but only saw the failures of Night Head Genesis, Wings of Rean, Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto, and Xam’d: Lost Memories. They reconfirmed the power of TV to reach the audience.

In 2008, the miraculous success of Kara no Kyoukai astonished the anime producers. The limited theater release of OVA brought about enormous profits, which well exceeded those of the major TV series. Kara no Kyoukai created a festival-like atmosphere among the audience and it was sublimated into a sense of unity. The purchase of DVD was regarded as a sort of “certificate” of the participation in the festival.

The strategy of Gundam UC is surely intended to follow Kara no Kyoukai phenomenon. Anime producers shake off TV broadcasting and try to rebuild a new business model by shuffling the order of theater release, online streaming and Blu-ray & DVD release. Nobody knows the answer, yet.

I wonder if other animation companies will follow this new trend. Only time will tell…What do you think?

It seems Gundam can help people get a new job. We know it is a little bit hard to build those Gundam models, but if you can do it, you get the job.

The Tokyo-based artificial teeth maker Bitec Global Japan has introduced Gundam model-making into its job application tests for this year’s new college graduates. As part of the group interviews this October, applicants assemble and paint the plastic model kit of Char’s Zaku II robotic mecha from the Mobile Suit Gundam anime within three hours. The firm makes the Comfort brand of artificial teeth, which are implanted into soft silicone as cushioning for the patient’s mouth.

During the job interviews, a group of three to five applicants assemble the model and paint it in three or more colors. This year’s job application tests will start on October 7.

I never got a chance to build one of this models but it is never too late to begin…Probably the first feeling I will get is frustration, then anger and finally happiness…Is it that hard?
